Winning The Race To Fill The Pantry

I’ve never finished first in  a road race. I’ve finished in the top ten. I’ve placed second in my age group. I’m just not fast enough to finish first in a road race.

Presenting Food Bank with CheckYet last Sunday, I won a road race.

On Sunday, November 10th, the Glastonbury River Runners hosted the 6th Annual McKeen Law Firm Race to Fill the Pantry 5K, and as usual, it was a huge success. On a beautiful fall morning – 50 degrees and clear skies – 300 runners, walkers, Zoomerangs kids and Achilles International athletes completed one of the fastest courses in area while supporting the Glastonbury Food Pantry. More importantly:

GRR Vice-President Brett Roberson presented Achilles International with a check for $1500.00 on behalf of the club.

And we were able to collect a trailer full of food for the Glastonbury Food Pantry as well as a check for $1500.00. In addition, race Naming Sponsor Ryan McKeen of McKeen Law Firm presented the food pantry with a check for $305.00, or $1 for every consecutive day that Ryan ran this past year, a streak that only a bout with the flu ended last week.

The practice of law is fundamentally about community. For me to be able to help support a fantastic race in the company of friends and family on a beautiful fall morning is as good as it gets.

Presenting a check to the food bank after walking two miles with my parents, wife, and children was one of those moments in life where everything made sense. When I decided to open a firm of my own, I spent a lot of time thinking about what I wanted it to become.

Starting and running a business is a lot like a race. It’s hard. There will be adversity. The only way to get ahead is to push yourself. The only way to finish is by refusing to quit. Even though I walked on Sunday, it sure felt like winning.

Thank you First Mile, LLC and Glastonbury River Runners for putting on a great race.
