I’ve watched every episode about Mad Men. I’ve read about the Steven Hayes trial.
In last week’s episode of Mad Men, Don Draper, when faced with a PR crisis for his firm said: ” If you don’t like what’s being said, change the conversation.”
What does the fictional Draper have to do with the Hayes trial?
Draper may as well have been giving free advice (not that they need it) to Hayes’ defense lawyers.
Helen Ubinas writes on Hayes: “during the guilt phase of the trial, the defense took every opportunity they had to show that it was all Joshua Komisarjevsky’s fault.”
That’s right not much good can be said about the life of Steven Hayes. The man is, was, and always will be a loser. So if you’re looking to spare your client from the death penalty, talking about a fellow loser, is probably a sound strategy.
Of course there are limits to the effectiveness of this argument. I’d bet a mortgage payment on Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce surviving. I wouldn’t bet 10 cents on the jury sparing Hayes from the death penalty.
