Connecticut’s New Sexting Law

by Ryan McKeen

Happy effective day in Connecticut.

A host of new Connecticut laws went into effect early this morning.  In the coming days, I’ll be writing about some of them.

Today’s topic: sexting.

Public Act 10-191 is an attempt by the legislature to crack down on sexting by teenagers. The act applies to senders of “sexts” ages 13 to 15 and recipients of “sexts” ages 13 to 17. The act applies solely to child pornography.

The act makes the transmission and possession of sexts for those age groups a misdemeanor.

The legislature is clearly trying to punish and deter teens sexting pictures of themselves or other teens to other teens.

You can read an excellent OLR summary of the bill here.
