I’ve uploaded this page to my Evernote account. It is useful for lawyers who need to make referrals to social service agencies.

October is domestic violence awareness month. Last year over 54,000 individuals sought the services of their local domestic violence agency in Connecticut.

Last Wednesday, I was honored to attend an early breakfast in Cromwell. I was named one of Connecticut’s First 100. An award given to male leaders committed to the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence to raise awareness in regard to the availability of and access to domestic violence services. I was in some really great company including some outstanding members of the legal profession.

I'm the guy on the far right with dark hair and my side to the camera.

The breakfast really got me thinking of what it is that I can do to combat such a large problem and I’m still thinking about that.

At the end of this version of “Betterman” that appears on the PJ20 soundtrack, Eddie Vedder urges listeners “Don’t run away”. I can’t think of a more appropriate chorus for Connecticut’s First 100 leaders.

by Ryan McKeen

Scrolling through Facebook, I came across several posts the gist of which were: “If Tiger cheated, I wouldn’t call it domestic violence…I would call it deserving!!”

There were a number of people who liked these posts and many who posted things like “OH YES” and “AMEN”.

Let’s assume for the purpose of this post that Tiger Woods was assaulted by his wife with a golf club. Let’s assume that the assault resulted in him being hospitalized. Let’s even make believe that Tiger was less than faithful in his marriage.

Why assume any of this? Because it’s what the people on Facebook were assuming.

I don’t know if any of that is true and what happened that night is beyond the scope of this post. I’ll leave that for TMZ.

The truth is that domestic violence is horrible. It’s horrible for men, women, children, and society.

It’s never okay to celebrate or glorify domestic violence no matter the gender of the victim.

Imagine if the shoe were on the other foot. Imagine if Tiger assaulted his wife with a golf club after allegations surfaced that she was having an affair. Imagine if he put her in the hospital and men celebrated that act on Facebook.

Men just like women can be the victims of domestic abuse and that’s not something to joke about.
