Sad City, Happy Office

Happily, local Hartford blogger Hakaan of Sad City Hartford visited our offices recently and just blogged about it.

The Sad City Hartford gents are famous around Hartford Blogland for their exploration of the buried Park River and their pay phone scavenger hunt.

One of the greatest things about their post on Freed McKeen is the inclusion of pictures from our office’s former life as the Emperor night club — a Hartford “hot spot” in the mid 2000s.  See our conference room when it was a private dining room.  See our basement when there were beds (yes, beds) in it.

No boring office for we three!

Finished Project: The Holiday Edition

My lovely mother reminded me yesterday that we never did a final video of the finished office.  Here it is — complete with holiday decorations.

Thank you all so much for your interest and feedback during our construction process.  We loved being able to share it.  Happiest holidays to you and yours.

(Another) Late Night in the (Almost) Office

Last night Kristen removed the remaining tile in the downstairs bathroom.  Ryan assembled our desk chairs.  I painted.

Kristen and I have been painting for days now.  So that we are not in the contractors’ way,  we put on our painting outfits (they are very attractive), go down into the space, and paint away on the weekends and after the contractors leave at night.  (At this point I am convinced we have installed enough wainscoting to circle the sun.)

Although as Ryan pointed out there are struggles associated with balancing building out an office, starting a law firm and prioritizing one’s family, we are mindful of what a tremendous opportunity this is.  We are proud to be able to put our bodies as well as our brains into these initial months of FreedMcKeen.  We know that everything we amateurs can do in between the contractors’ serious skilled work gets us closer to the goal line of opening our physical office.

Kristen and I live above our office.  We run down with our coffee in the morning to answer questions.  Although at times during this phase it can be a bit much to have such easy access to the office, it is also extremely efficient for moving things forward.

(Lately we also take down a green smoothie for Brian Nelson, our awesome general contractor, who last Saturday won the Hogsback Half Marathon in an hour and fourteen minutes.  His winnings included a pink pig cookie and a piece of chocolate-covered bacon.  Brian is a vegetarian, so let us know if you want in on the chocolate bacon raffle.)

We three are really, really lucky to be opening this law firm.

But if you come too close, I am likely to paint you China White.

Here we are, last night:

Paint the Town Red

Or, paint the office Balboa Mist.

We spend yesterday painting the first floor of the office.  We have a first coat up on all of the walls, and later, after the floors are sanded and re-stained this coming week, will wash the dust off of them and do a (very, very careful) final coat.

Frostbite

Yesterday Kristen and I set out to accomplish two things: (1) frost the glass in the small conference room, and (2) paint the small conference room walls.  We had set ourselves up for success.  The day before we’d taken a trip to Home Depot and purchased (we thought) all of the necessary supplies.  We were caffeinated, dressed in painting clothes, and in the office ready to work by 9 am.  Our smooth start to the day was the end of the day’s smooth.

The small conference room has large windows that look into the commercial arcade at The Linden.  We don’t want to lose light from the hallway, but need more privacy than clear glass provides.  We decided to frost the glass using a frosting spray that looks and works like spray paint.  After cleaning the windows, taping the windowsills and the line where we wanted the frosting to end, and reading the directions multiple times (I swear), Kristen donned a scary mask and commenced the spraying.

We had purchased two cans of the spray to be safe, even though only one can should have been necessary for our square footage.  Despite Kristen’s vigorous can shaking and the direction’s assurances that we would need two and “perhaps more” coats, two coats of spray left us with sorta-frosted glass and every line from every sweep of the spray can clearly visible.

We didn’t give up.  We hoped that another layer of spray would blend the coverage and fix the streaking problem.  We went to Home Depot and bought two more cans of spray.

It didn’t work.  The glass grew increasingly frosty streaky while we grew increasingly frustrated.

For the third time in two days, we went to Home Depot.  We bought acetone and sundries with which to remove the dumb spray frost.  We bought massive stickers that you apply to windows to frost them.  We bought a little refrigerator to hold water and beer.

After several hours, we once again had clear windows and jettisoned the idea of applying the stickers right away.  We both have perfectionist tendencies and decided that wrangling with massive stickers after ten frustrating hours spent accomplishing nothing more than getting back to where we had started the day was a poor idea.

So we painted the darn wall.

Tear Down These Walls

The work that has happened in the unit over the past two days is astonishing.  The first floor is loaded with the dry wall, metal supports, and duct work that has been removed from the downstairs.  Thanks to the removal of the duct work we now have a basement with almost 8 foot high ceilings!

We also took down walls and removed a doorway at the botton of the stairs, which will make the whole space not only more open and attractive, but also more useful.

Upstairs, Downstairs

We met with the workers and discussed everything from placement of fixtures to location of floor outlets to removing a bump in the wood floors to how the banister will look.  Meanwhile, the electrician was on his second full day of work on our office.  The electricity still isn’t on in the downstairs, but he has a string of utility lights so that he and the contractors can work down there.  This is the first time we’ve been able to see the downstairs without the aid of flashlights, so I took the above video.
