Dean, Garber, and Guns….

by Ryan McKeen

…… have become the sex, drugs and rock and roll of the Republican attorney general primary. The issue just seems to be getting bigger:  Rick Green’s column on the subject today.

Hats off to Meghan Freed for kicking off the discussion on this site.

Meghan’s post strengthens the incredibly self serving, never before written or said,  idea  (tongue firmly in cheek) that the road to the corner office on 55 Elm Street runs through A Connecticut Law Blog of all places.

For the record, I like Garber and I hope he wins the primary but George Jepsen has my support for the office.

As for Dean, how can anyone running for statewide office advocate for guns in schools?

Meghan offered up some nice legal reasons as to why the government has the authority to place restrictions on the right to bear arms. I’m not going there.

What I’m going to give you is my gut reaction to advocating for firearms training in schools: ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!?

I went to school with plenty of assholes and I thank God that in no way shape or form did the school provide them with firearms during the school day.

I hope Ross wins the Republican primary. I can’t vote in it but I hope that’s the outcome.

In the interest of full disclosure, my brother’s name is Ross and I think highly of him – so there may be some personal bias in this post. I also think it would be awesome if Garber made up some “Vote Ross” shirts.  I’d probably buy one for my brother.

    Ryan,

I am with you 100% I am a Jepson supporter, but I definitely hope Ross defeats Dean in the Republican primary.

Worst public policy suggestion I’ve heard in decades. An embarrassment to modern politics.

Reasonable people can no longer be on the fence with respect to Martha Dean. Teaching children to use guns in school? That class will probably fit into the schedule after “Intelligent Design: Who Needs Science?” and “How We Should Overthrow the Government Because the 2nd Amendment Says We Can.”

C’mon guys! She didn’t say “let’s bring guns into the schools and teach kids how to use them.” She said she wanted to promote gun safety education for kids. Now, I’m the first to say that it’s a ridiculous position to take in the AG’s race and shows that she is alarmingly quick to troll for votes by bringing up irrelevant issues. But that’s the way to dismiss her ideas: as irrelevant for what they are, not by making them cartoons of what they are.

She didn’t say gun safety education for kids in schools. What she said was firearms training so that kids can learn to exercise their most basic of constitutional rights. Watch the video starting at 5:00: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9dohpdYm5A&feature=player_embedded#!
