Tiger Woods and Domestic Violence Against Men

by Ryan McKeen

Scrolling through Facebook, I came across several posts the gist of which were: “If Tiger cheated, I wouldn’t call it domestic violence…I would call it deserving!!”

There were a number of people who liked these posts and many who posted things like “OH YES” and “AMEN”.

Let’s assume for the purpose of this post that Tiger Woods was assaulted by his wife  with a golf club. Let’s assume that the assault resulted in him being hospitalized.  Let’s even make believe that Tiger was less than faithful in his marriage.

Why assume any of this?  Because it’s what the people on Facebook were assuming.

I don’t know if any of that is true and what happened that night is beyond the scope of this post. I’ll leave that for TMZ.

The truth is that domestic violence is horrible. It’s horrible for men, women, children, and society.

It’s  never okay to celebrate or glorify domestic violence no matter the gender of the victim.

Imagine if the shoe were on the other foot. Imagine if Tiger assaulted his wife with a golf club after allegations surfaced that she was having an affair. Imagine if he put her in the hospital and men celebrated that act on Facebook.

Men just like women can be the victims of domestic abuse and that’s not something to joke about.

Even if it isn’t what happened in the Tiger Woods case, this is a really important message to get out there. Chuck Finley took a lot of ribbing when the stories about he and Tawny Kitaen came to light but the fact is SHE was the abusive one and his only course of action turned out to be going to the authorities because he knew fighting back would make him be considered the abuser.

I’m all about women being empowered but joking about a woman being abused is never funny so why is it all right to make the same joke when it happens to a man?
