Does Connecticut Recognize Common Law Marriage?

No.

This is another question that I get asked with some frequency at various functions.

Check out the Judicial Branch Library website for more information on common law marriage in Connecticut.

By Connecticut laws not recognizing common law marriage is a tragedy. This becomes a loophole for either partner who is abusing to continue without suffering the consequences of his/her actions.

Please explain your thoughts in further detail (your sentence fragments are misleading). If you are referring to incidents of domestic violence and spousal abuse and you are inferring that the abuse would continue without consequence you would be incorrect. In the State of Connecticut domestic violence laws specifically included individuals who cohabitate (within the same dwelling), .i.e. "room mates", and "boyfriend & girlfriend" as well as individuals who have a common child (living together or not) and obviously individuals in a legal binding marriage. Domestic violence laws also include siblings and "step"-siblings who cohabitate. However, I am not sure how domestic violence laws apply to extened family members related by marriage, e.g. Aunt, Uncles, etc. All the aforementioned circumstances carry the same weight and penalty regardless of the relationship of the involved parties. I hope this information helps and puts to rest some of your concerns relating to this matter.

I’ve been with my fiance for 15 yrs. but hadn’t gotten married yet, but live together and everyone knows us as a we. He has passed suddenly and I have no rights to his disability income. We had a date planned for Nov. 7th but because of my illnesses we were waiting for a happier time. I’m close to 61 and I need help. Please someone help!! I’ve read all I can in the last couple of days but find no hope. I can’t work and am in the process of my disability (liver transplant) and can work a couple of days each week. May the Lord watch over all of you and my fiance was my life, but I’m still here.
